2. Indications and Usage

Indications:Easy fatigue, cold extremities, decreased or increased urine output, and occasional thirst, along with the following symptoms: lower limb pain, lower back pain, numbness, blurred vision in the elderly, itching, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and edema.

Directions:The usual adult dose is 18 tablets per day, taken orally in 2 to 3 divided doses before or between meals. The dose may be adjusted based on age, weight, and symptoms.

3. Pharmacological Summary

The mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated. Animal studies have shown that it increases bladder capacity and modulates micturition contractions; it inhibits norepinephrine-induced urethral contractions; and its inhibitory effect on contractions in diaphragmatic nerve-muscle preparations is not reversed by neostigmine.

4. Precautions and Side Effects

This medication must be prescribed according to the patient’s “zheng” (constitution and symptoms); discontinue use if no improvement is observed. When used in combination with other Kampo formulas, be mindful of overlapping herbal ingredients, especially in formulations containing Aconite.

People who are physically robust, prone to heat accumulation, and have a flushed face are more likely to experience palpitations, heat-related symptoms, numbness of the tongue, and nausea. Those with extremely weak digestive systems or who already suffer from loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting may experience worsened digestive symptoms.

Not recommended for pregnant women or women who may be pregnant (Peony bark carries a risk of premature labor, and side effects from Aconite are more likely to occur). Use with caution during breastfeeding. Use with caution in children (contains Aconite powder). The dosage should be reduced for the elderly.
